Welcome to the Doctor Who Retro Sprite Gallery.
This webpage is a collection of Doctor Who character sprites by myself (Carnivac) and my friend Schu as they might have looked in a late 1980's/early 1990's video game. These are created using the colour palette of the NES games console (though not it's colours per sprite limit). This is an ongoing project with new characters being added whenever Schu or I have some time to spare.
We hope you enjoy them. If you wish to get in touch then feel free to e-mail me by clicking my tag below.

What do the
and
icons mean?
The
means this sprite has recently been added or that it has a new variant.
The
means this sprite has variants. This can mean slightly different colours or edited to include a different item, for example a hat. These are described as variants as they are not sufficiently different enough from the original to warrant their own space on the main gallery layout. Click the sprite to see it along with it's variants.
Are these 8 bit or 16 bit sprites?
Somewhere in between. The sprites use colours picked from the palette of the 8 bit NES console but they use more of them in the one sprite than the NES was capable of so they tend to look a bit more like Super Nintendo or Sega Mega Drive(Genesis) sprites. It's why I've chosen to describe them as 'Retro' sprites rather than either 8 or 16 bit (and rather than the in-between but nonsensical '12 bit').
Do you take requests for particular characters?
Not usually, no. We often just sprite whatever character we feel like doing at the time.
Can you do full animation sprite sheets for particular characters so I can make a game with them?
No, niether of us have the time to do animations for any of the characters.
Why does this site look a bit blocky?
In keeping with the retro theme all the sprites (plus the site's graphics such as the titles and sonic screwdriver cursor) are doubled up for a slightly pixelated look.
How do I close the category? How do I hide the sprite information I just revealed?
Simply click the same graphic you used to open the category or show the information to close them. Also you can click on the sprites revealed by the information to hide them again.
I never heard of this character. What story were they in?
On the bottom of the information revealed by clicking a sprite you'll see a WIKI button. Click it to open a tab to the relevant article on the 'TARDIS - Index File' wiki which should tell you all you need to know about that character.
Can I make bead sprites/stitch patterns/sprite comics/whatever based on these sprites?
Yes, but please e-mail for permission first (and to let us know as we've enjoyed seeing the various works we've seen based on our sprites) and if possible include a link back to this site.
What is 'expanded universe'?
It's a term often used by fans of a franchise to refer to the spin-off material in other media such as novels, audio plays and comic books.
Why haven't you done this character yet?
There's no real order in which the sprites are created. Often it's just down to motivation at the time usually caused by watching a particular story in which a character appears.
Who's your favourite Doctor?
Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor. And before him it was a tie between Jon Pertwee (the Third Doctor) and Peter Davison (the Fifth Doctor). We like all the Doctors to various degrees. He's our favourite time travelling alien no matter what face he has. :)
